Early Life

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1894. He briefly studied architecture at the Technical School in Frederiksberg and the Technical College in Copenhagen but never completed a formal education. Instead, he pursued a broad creative career as an architect, designer, writer and cultural critic.

Throughout his life, Henningsen maintained a deep interest in the relationship between design, technology and society. He believed thoughtfully designed objects could improve everyday living, combining technical innovation with a distinctly human-centred approach.

Design Philosophy

Unlike many designers of his generation, Poul Henningsen began with the quality of the light rather than the appearance of the lamp itself.

He studied how light behaved, how the human eye perceived brightness, and how glare influenced comfort. His goal was to create lighting that felt natural, balanced and pleasant, allowing spaces to be illuminated without exposing the harsh brightness of the light source.

Collaboration with Louis Poulsen

One of the most significant partnerships in twentieth-century industrial design was that between Poul Henningsen and the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen.

Their collaboration began in the mid-1920s, when electric lighting was rapidly becoming standard in homes. At the time, most fixtures produced harsh glare and uneven illumination. Together, Henningsen and Louis Poulsen developed entirely new lighting principles that prioritised visual comfort over raw brightness.

Over the following four decades they continually refined these ideas, producing lamps that remain among the most celebrated examples of Danish design. Many of Henningsen's original designs are still manufactured by Louis Poulsen today, largely unchanged because the underlying principles remain as effective now as when they were first developed.
