Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish designer, architect and writer best known for his innovative approach to lighting. His work focused on controlling glare and distributing light in a softer and more comfortable way.

Henningsen developed his influential multi-shade lighting system during the 1920s. Carefully positioned shades reflected and directed the light while shielding the bulb from direct view. This principle became the foundation for many of his designs for Louis Poulsen.

His best-known lamps include the PH 5 pendant, PH Artichoke and the various PH multi-shade lamps. Henningsen designed each model around the behaviour of light rather than decoration alone. The distinctive forms resulted directly from this functional approach.

Poul Henningsen had a lasting influence on Scandinavian lighting design. His combination of technical understanding, functional design and sculptural form remains highly relevant today. Explore available vintage Poul Henningsen lighting in our collection.
