Sven Middelboe

Sven Middelboe was a Danish designer best known for his sculptural lighting designs from the mid-20th century. His work combines functional illumination with carefully balanced forms and reflects the strong Danish tradition of designing light as an integral part of an interior.

Middelboe worked with Danish lighting manufacturer Lyfa, which produced several of his designs. He explored layered shades and reflected light to create comfortable illumination while giving the lamps a distinctive architectural appearance.

One of his best-known designs is the Verona pendant. Its series of concentric metal shades directs and diffuses the light while shielding the light source from direct view. The construction creates a characteristic sculptural form even when the lamp is not illuminated.
