Severin Hansen Jr. (1936–2020)

Early Life

Severin Hansen Jr. was born in Denmark in 1936 into a family deeply rooted in furniture craftsmanship. Growing up during the golden age of Danish Modern, he was surrounded by a culture in which quality, functionality and honest materials were considered fundamental principles rather than design trends.

Rather than pursuing dramatic or experimental forms, Hansen developed an approach centred on precision and restraint. His work reflects the traditions of Danish cabinetmakers, where the quality of construction was every bit as important as the appearance of the finished piece.

Design Philosophy

Severin Hansen believed that good furniture should never draw attention to itself through unnecessary decoration. Instead, beauty emerged from careful proportions, flawless construction and the natural character of the timber.

His most recognisable signature is the use of perfectly executed mitred corner joints, where the grain of the tabletop flows continuously into the legs. Achieving this effect required exceptional craftsmanship and careful veneer selection, creating furniture that appears carved from a single uninterrupted piece of wood.
