Cado Wall System, Poul Cadovius, Denmark, 1960s
Designed by Poul Cadovius, the Cado wall system is one of the defining icons of Danish modular furniture. Its innovative wall-mounted construction transformed the way storage was integrated into the home, replacing heavy cabinets with a flexible system that appears to float effortlessly against the wall.
This original composition is executed in beautifully figured rosewood, displaying exceptional grain patterns and rich natural colour variation throughout. The arrangement combines open shelving with two cabinets, creating a composition that is as practical as it is architectural.
A particularly desirable feature is the upper drop-down bar cabinet. Supported by elegant brass stays, it opens to reveal a beautifully finished interior with integrated dividers, making it ideal for storing glassware, bottles or other treasured objects. Below, the spacious sliding-door cabinet offers adjustable shelving for concealed storage, while the open shelves provide ample room for books, ceramics, artwork or audio equipment.
The wall system has been fully restored and refinished, allowing the depth and warmth of the rosewood to be appreciated once again while preserving the character of the original design.

Cado Wandsysteem, Poul Cadovius, Denemarken, Jaren 60

Cado was one of the most influential Danish furniture manufacturers of the post-war era. Founded by designer Poul Cadovius, the company became synonymous with intelligent modular furniture, exceptional craftsmanship and the clean architectural language that defines Danish Modern design.
Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, Cado produced some of Scandinavia's most innovative storage systems, sideboards and cabinets. The company also collaborated with many of Denmark's leading designers, helping to shape an entire generation of modern furniture.
Today, original Cado pieces are highly regarded for their timeless aesthetics, outstanding quality and enduring versatility.

After the success of his revolutionary Royal System, introduced in 1948, Poul Cadovius recognised the need for a company capable of producing furniture that reflected his own vision of flexible, well-crafted interiors.
He founded Cado in the 1950s, creating a manufacturer that combined innovative design with traditional Danish cabinetmaking. Rather than producing furniture as isolated objects, Cado focused on complete furnishing solutions that could adapt to changing homes and lifestyles.
This philosophy distinguished the company from many of its contemporaries and established Cado as one of the pioneers of modular furniture design.
At the heart of Cado's philosophy was the belief that furniture should make better use of space while maintaining elegance and craftsmanship.
The company's designs are characterised by:
Many pieces were designed to be combined, expanded or reconfigured over time, allowing owners to adapt their interiors without replacing entire furniture collections.
This emphasis on flexibility was remarkably forward-thinking and remains one of the defining qualities of vintage Cado furniture today.
Although Poul Cadovius remained closely involved with the company, Cado became a platform for some of Denmark's most respected furniture designers.
Among those who designed for Cado were:
These collaborations brought together diverse design approaches while maintaining the consistent quality and understated elegance for which Cado became known.
The result was a collection of furniture that balanced innovation with traditional Danish craftsmanship.
Cado produced a wide variety of furniture, with particular emphasis on storage and modular living.
Some of the company's best-known designs include:
Whether freestanding or wall-mounted, Cado furniture is recognised for its precise construction, elegant detailing and practical functionality.
Like many of Denmark's finest manufacturers, Cado placed great emphasis on quality materials and skilled cabinetmaking.
Furniture was typically produced in beautifully figured teak, rosewood or oak, often combining solid timber with carefully selected veneers to highlight the natural character of the wood.
Attention to detail extended throughout each piece, from finely fitted sliding doors and smoothly operating drawers to sculpted handles and meticulously finished interiors.
This level of craftsmanship has allowed many original Cado pieces to remain in daily use more than half a century after they were made.
Today, Cado is recognised as one of the defining names of Danish Modern furniture.
Its combination of architectural thinking, modular flexibility and exceptional craftsmanship continues to resonate with collectors, interior designers and enthusiasts around the world. Original Cado furniture remains highly sought after, not only for its historical importance but also for its ability to integrate effortlessly into contemporary interiors.
The company's enduring reputation reflects Poul Cadovius' vision that furniture should evolve with the way people live. More than fifty years later, Cado's designs continue to demonstrate that thoughtful functionality and timeless beauty are inseparable.

Poul Cadovius was one of the most influential figures in post-war Danish furniture design, though he is perhaps best described as both a designer and an innovator. His work transformed the way furniture interacted with architecture, replacing heavy floor-standing cabinets with elegant wall-mounted storage systems that offered unprecedented flexibility.
Introduced in the late 1940s, the Royal System became one of the earliest modular wall systems ever produced and remains a landmark in Scandinavian design history. More than seventy years later, Cadovius' ideas continue to shape contemporary interiors, where adaptable, space-efficient furniture is more relevant than ever.
Poul Cadovius was born in Copenhagen in 1911. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not begin his career as a cabinetmaker or architect. Instead, he trained as an upholsterer before gradually moving into furniture design and manufacturing.
His practical understanding of furniture production gave him a different perspective from many designers of the period. Rather than focusing solely on the appearance of furniture, Cadovius became fascinated by how it occupied space within the home.
Following the Second World War, when living spaces became smaller and more functional, he recognised the need for furniture that could adapt to changing lifestyles. This insight would lead to his most significant innovation.
In 1948, Poul Cadovius introduced the Royal System, a modular shelving system that fundamentally changed the relationship between furniture and interior architecture.
Cadovius famously remarked that "most of us live on the bottom of a cube." While rooms offered four walls and a ceiling, traditional furniture occupied only the floor. By moving storage onto the wall, valuable floor space could remain open, making interiors feel lighter and more spacious.
The Royal System consists of slender wooden wall rails onto which shelves, cabinets, desks and display units can be freely arranged. Because every component is interchangeable, the system can evolve over time as needs change.
This combination of flexibility, craftsmanship and architectural simplicity was revolutionary for its time and remains one of the defining achievements of twentieth-century furniture design.
Cadovius believed furniture should adapt to the home rather than forcing the home to adapt to the furniture.
His designs are characterised by:
Unlike many large cabinets of the period, his wall systems create a sense of openness. The visual weight is reduced while functionality is increased, allowing interiors to feel organised without becoming crowded.
Although highly practical, Cadovius never compromised on aesthetics. His furniture combines precise Danish cabinetmaking with elegant proportions, warm natural materials and subtle detailing.
To produce and further develop his ideas, Cadovius established his own company, Cado, which would become one of Denmark's leading furniture manufacturers during the 1950s and 1960s.
Under the Cado name, he produced not only his own designs but also collaborated with many of Denmark's most respected designers, including:
These collaborations helped establish Cado as one of the most important names in Danish modern furniture, combining innovative design with exceptional production quality.
The Royal System itself became an international success and was exported throughout Europe, North America and Japan.
Although Poul Cadovius designed a wide variety of furniture throughout his career, several pieces have become true icons of Danish modern design.
Among his best-known works are:
Many vintage examples retain their original versatility, allowing components to be rearranged decades after they were first produced.
Poul Cadovius fundamentally changed the way furniture occupies space within the home. His vision of modular, wall-mounted storage anticipated many principles of contemporary interior design long before they became mainstream.
Today his systems remain highly sought after by collectors, architects and design enthusiasts. Their clean lines, exceptional craftsmanship and remarkable flexibility make them equally suited to historic interiors and modern homes.
Original Royal System and Cado pieces continue to command strong interest on the international vintage market, while licensed reissues ensure that Cadovius' ideas remain accessible to new generations.
More than simply creating furniture, Poul Cadovius introduced a new way of thinking about living space. His designs demonstrate that practicality and elegance need never be separate, and his influence continues to be felt wherever thoughtful, adaptable interiors are created.
