Johannes Sorth

Johannes Sorth was a Danish furniture designer known for practical and refined storage furniture from the mid-20th century. His designs combine straightforward forms with thoughtful details and the warm appearance of Scandinavian woods.

Sorth worked closely with Nexø Møbelfabrik on the Danish island of Bornholm. The manufacturer produced many of his best-known designs during the 1960s. His work includes bookcases, cabinets and secretary desks, often designed to provide several functions within a compact piece of furniture.

Teak and rosewood appear frequently in his designs. Clean surfaces, sliding doors and integrated writing compartments give many pieces a simple and functional character. Sorth kept decorative details restrained and allowed the materials and proportions to define the furniture.
